Strike The Match

A dark Southern blues reckoning with the moment silence stops being survival and choosing the fire becomes the only way forward.

The Story

I wrote Strike The Match about the moment silence stops protecting you and starts keeping you frozen. You can swallow the truth, hold your breath, and wait for something outside you to change, but eventually what you have buried begins asking for air. The fire in this song is not rage, rescue, or spectacle. It is the decision to face what I already know and accept whatever mark that choice may leave. I was not trying to write a victory song. I wanted to capture the narrow space between survival and change, when standing still becomes more dangerous than striking the match. Some fires are not there to save you or destroy you. They force you to decide whether you will remain frozen or finally move through the dark with your own steady hand.

Some fires you don't escape You just decide

Some fires you don't escape You just decide

Lyrics

There's a silence in this room
Thicker than the smoke
These walls know every secret
I never spoke
I've been holdin' my breath
Since the night we met

I drowned enough truth
To know it floats
Can't keep starvin'
What still wants hope

So I strike the match
With a steady hand
If it burns me down
I'll understand
I ain't tryin' to win
I ain't tryin' to run
I just need that fire
In these frozen lungs

There's a weight in my chest
That don't sleep
Every promise I made
I still keep
I learned how to stand
In the flame
Call it survival
Call it shame

I held my tongue
Till it turned to stone
A man can't outrun
What he's always known

So I strike the match
No alibi
If it burns too bright
Let it burn
I ain't askin' mercy
I ain't askin' grace
Just give me heat
In this frozen place

I ain't waitin' on rescue
Ain't beggin' for a sign
Some fires you don't escape
You just decide

So I strike the match
Let it leave its mark
Let it scar my name

There's a silence in this room
Thicker than the smoke
These walls know every secret
I never spoke
I've been holdin' my breath
Since the night we met

I drowned enough truth
To know it floats
Can't keep starvin'
What still wants hope
