Ain't Mine To Keep

Ain't Mine To Keep

A dark Americana reckoning with the ghosts, guilt, and old fire we carry - and the hard mercy of setting down what was never ours.

The Story

I wrote Ain't Mine To Keep about the weight we can carry for so long that we stop asking where it came from. Other people's pain, guilt, expectations, old names, and ghosts can settle into us until they feel like part of our own bones. I wanted the song to live in the moment that truth begins to break through: carrying something for years does not mean it belongs to you forever. Letting go is not forgetting what happened, denying who mattered, or pretending the weight left no mark. It is learning the difference between what shaped you and what still has the right to live inside you. The answer does not come cleanly. When you set something down, you do not always know whether it will leave or follow. But healing cannot begin if holding on is the only thing you know. Some pain can be honored without being carried forever. Some of that fire was never mine to keep.

Ghosts I carried like they were mine Now I'm layin' it down What ain't mine to keep

Ghosts I carried like they were mine Now I'm layin' it down What ain't mine to keep

Ghosts I carried like they were mine Now I'm layin' it down What ain't mine to keep

Ghosts I carried like they were mine Now I'm layin' it down What ain't mine to keep

Lyrics

Woke up with a weight that ain't mine

Feels like I've been runnin' someone else's miles
Carryin' names I don't say out loud
Boots in the gravel behind me now
But I never hear 'em when I turn around

Maybe truth don't live
In what I hold

Ghosts I carried like they were mine
Settle in my bones, take their time
But some of that fire
Ain't mine to keep

I been walkin' roads I don't recall
Still feel the weight like I owe it all
Voices don't fade, they just change shape

A man don't heal
Just holdin' on

Ghosts I carried like they were mine
Settle in my bones, take their time
But some of that fire
Ain't mine to keep

If I set it down
Does it leave or follow

Ghosts I carried like they were mine
Now I'm layin' it down
What ain't mine to keep

Ain't mine to keep

Woke up with a weight that ain't mine

Feels like I've been runnin' someone else's miles
Carryin' names I don't say out loud
Boots in the gravel behind me now
But I never hear 'em when I turn around

Maybe truth don't live
In what I hold

Ghosts I carried like they were mine
Settle in my bones, take their time
But some of that fire
Ain't mine to keep

I been walkin' roads I don't recall
Still feel the weight like I owe it all
Voices don't fade, they just change shape

Just holdin' on

But some of that fire
Ain't mine to keep

If I set it down
Does it leave or follow

Now I'm layin' it down
