Cold Mercy

Cold Mercy

A dark Southern swamp blues prayer from inside a prison of concrete and memory - where guilt, judgment, and the last hope of redemption share the same air.

The Story

I wrote Cold Mercy from the place where punishment and regret begin sounding like the same locked door. The cell is real in the song, but the deeper prison is being haunted by the man I have been and wondering whether anything worth saving remains. This is not a song about escaping consequences or asking mercy to erase the past. It is about reaching the point where guilt alone can no longer make you better. The prayer is worn down and uncertain: if something good is still alive in me, do not let it die here. Mercy arrives cold because it does not comfort first. It tells the truth, strips away excuses, and asks who you will become after judgment has done its work. I wanted the song to hold punishment and hope in the same room. Redemption does not open every door or undo every sin. Sometimes it begins with one honest plea from the lowest place you have known - not for heaven, not for release, but for the chance to stand as a better man.

Lyrics

Steel bars humming in the heat of the night
Fluorescent angels flicker in the hallway light
I ain't prayed in years but I'm prayin' now
For a little grace to find me somehow

They say a man ain't meant to break
But hell, this place will teach you what it takes
I wear my sins like a second skin
And every day feels like the same damn end

Cold mercy, come and wash me clean
I'm tired of bein' haunted by the man I've been
If there's somethin' left worth savin' in my soul
Lord, don't let it go
Cold mercy, find me in this hole

Warden walks slow like a ghost in the hall
Boots on concrete sound like judgment calls
Every echo digs a little more in
Like the world takin' notes on every sin

Ain't no sunlight where the lost men sleep
Just the hum of sorrow runnin' ten miles deep
But a song keeps risin' in the back of my throat
Like a memory of livin' before I lost hope

Cold mercy, come and wash me clean
I'm tired of bein' haunted by the man I've been
If there's somethin' left worth savin' in my soul
Lord, don't let it go
Cold mercy, find me in this hole

If redemption's real, let it break these chains
Let it bleed through the cracks in the walls of this place
I ain't askin' for heaven, just a chance to stand
As a better man, a better man

Cold mercy, come and wash me clean
I'm tired of bein' haunted by the man I've been
If there's somethin' left worth savin' in my soul
Lord, don't let it go
Cold mercy, I need you more than you know

Steel bars humming in the heat of the night
If mercy finds me here, then I'll be alright
